The Guardians Across Mountains & Sea

The Guardians Across Mountains & Sea

The Guardians Across Mountains & Sea exhibition is being organized by the Australian High Commission in collaboration with the National Crafts Museum & Hastkala Academy from March 10 to March 30, 2026 .

Indian tribal masks are crafted using a diverse range of materials such as wood, clay, paper-mâché, and natural fibres. Regions including West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Odisha are particularly renowned for their distinctive mask-making traditions.

One of the most celebrated examples is the vibrant masks used in Chhau dance, where performers wear elaborate masks to portray mythological characters and heroic narratives. These masks are not only performance objects but also important cultural expressions that reflect the beliefs, stories, and artistic heritage of tribal communities.

This showcase of Grace’s work at the National Crafts Museum & Hastkala Academy is a powerful testament to the growing interest in Indigenous and tribal cultures between Australia and India , fostering a cross-cultural dialogue on identity, sustainability, and the enduring strength of Indigenous knowledge.
